George Dunn Ellsworth, ME Death – Beloved Pilot and Air Force Mechanic Has Died

With great sadness, we mourn the passing of George Dunn, a cherished figure in the Maine aviation community whose life spanned more than a century and left an enduring legacy in the skies and beyond.

Born and raised in Ellsworth, George was known for his remarkable ability to fix almost anything—an instinct that served him well during his time in the United States Air Force, where he worked as an engine mechanic on the formidable Convair B-36 Peacemaker. That early experience sparked a lifelong passion for aviation that would define his life.

George brought the first seaplane to Beech Hill Pond, flying a 1941 Taylorcraft and helping transform the area into a hub for seaplane enthusiasts. He passed his knowledge and love of flying down through generations, teaching four of his six children to fly floats. His son Jimmy fondly recalled early memories of sitting in the luggage compartment of that Taylorcraft, watching his brother Tommy learn to fly—moments that became the foundation of a deep family tradition in aviation.

In recognition of his decades of safe flying and dedication, George was awarded the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award in 2014, honoring over 50 years of commitment to aviation excellence.

A longtime fixture of the Greenville Seaplane Fly-In since 1975, George made his mark early by winning the Bomb Drop Contest at just the second annual gathering. Over time, the “Flying Dunns” became a beloved presence, with generations of the family taking part at the Stobie Seaplane Base—a testament to the legacy he built.

Beyond his personal achievements, George and his family introduced countless individuals to aviation, helping shape Beech Hill Pond into the vibrant seaplane community it is today. His influence extended far beyond the cockpit, inspiring those who shared his passion for flight.

George is remembered not only for his aviation accomplishments but also for his service and dedication to remembrance. A decorated pilot who flew Halifaxes and Mosquitos, he completed 44 operations with 10 and 76 Squadrons and remained a strong advocate for honoring those who served in RAF Bomber Command. His efforts in supporting memorial initiatives reflected a lifelong commitment to preserving history.

At the age of 103, George Dunn leaves behind a legacy of skill, passion, and family tradition that will continue to soar for generations.
