CHICAGO, IL — The Chicagoland community is mourning the loss of Pete Kastanes, a beloved personality and passionate contributor to the “Vanished Chicagoland” online community, who passed away following a courageous battle with cancer.

Pete Kastanes was far more than a history enthusiast—he was a vibrant presence whose passion for Chicago’s past helped bring its forgotten places back to life. Through vintage photos, personal reflections, and engaging conversations, he became a recognizable and cherished figure among thousands who shared his love for the city’s rich history and cultural identity.

Known for his unmistakable personality and what many described as an undeniable “It Factor,” Pete had a unique ability to connect with people. Whether sharing a nostalgic post, debating the legacy of a long-closed landmark, or simply posting one of his signature selfies, he brought authenticity, humor, and heart into every interaction.

Born and raised in Chicago, Pete carried a deep-rooted love for the city. Though not formally trained as a historian, his knowledge of Chicagoland’s lost architecture, businesses, and neighborhoods was extensive. More importantly, he understood that history was not just about places—but about people and memories.

Despite being diagnosed with cancer approximately 18 months before his passing, Pete chose to keep his illness largely private. He continued engaging with his community, posting regularly, and showing up for others with the same energy and passion that defined him. Friends say he refused to let his illness define him, choosing instead to live fully and authentically.
